Not sure what was first chicken or the egg, but this project is referred to in the book "Microsoft .NET: Architecting Applications for the Enterprise" by Dino Esposito and Andrea Saltarello. It's a good book and it has details on where to get the missing pieces .

A short overview and linklist about needed tools will be very helpfull to start the samples.

The documentation is not exisitent. Did you think, the source itself is enough documentation?

To hold the complete kit in one solution is also not very helpfull.

May be the project is a good idea and maybe there is a lot of cool tuff inside - but the first steps are making me crazy...

I don't understand approach for transaction support.

Method BeginTransaction() does not create a new TransactionScope. It only sets the property IsInTransaction. TransactionScope is created only in Commit. So, if I read a record a while ago, than decided to modify it there will be no check for any modifications that happen between my read and commit. Please explain.

I solved the problem copy the missing .dll in the bin folder of the presentation I'm using.

IE, copy ManagedDesigns.Northwind.Data.Hibernate.dll or ManagedDesigns.Northwind.Data.SqlServer.dll (if u change the provider in the config file like me)

in the folder ..\Baseline-branch-2.0\src\ManagedDesigns.Northwind.Windows.UI\bin\Debug

next if u try to run another bug will came up, u have to download DataAccessApplicationBlock.msi, intall it and compile, after copy the dll

Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.dll in the same folder as before.

I have tested the right working of the project using Windows form and sql provider, still have some problem with Nhibernate.

Hi,

When I start debugging I get an exception when trying to load the provider assembly, "activeProvider = Assembly.Load(providerName);".

I'm using version 4.1 of ENTLIB can this be the cause?

When I try to use the SqlServer plugin as oppose to the Nhibernate plugin the applcation errors because it is unable to load the assembly via reflection because they are not in the same class library project. Anybody else running into this problem?

actually, NSK was started way before me and Dino decided to write NAAE, so here and there NSK lags behind the topics expressed within the book. I've restarted working on the project and I hope to be able to upload a refreshed codebase during the next weeks.

Sorry for the misleading branch name; "2.0" was intended to say: "hey, I'm the branch dedicated to the version 2.0 of the .NET Framework" but it was definitely a bad choice. BTW, I'm going to have a refresh of the MVC project in order to add some new stuff, such a "presentation model"-like interaction between controllers and views

you're right: the whole MVP stack was built by Corrado and intended to be used only in the Winforms and WPF based GUIs; I've tried to reuse them for a web presentation layer, but it would need serious refactoring I don't plan to start any time soon because at this very moment I'm focused on updating the MVC application

Since EF v1 lacks of PI capabilities, it would be hard to make it fit within NSK. I'm thinking about creating a branch dedicated to Microsoft's own O/RM

Northwind Starter Kit
The Northwind Starter Kit is a sample application produced by Managed Designs (http://www.manageddesigns.it) and intended to be used as a blueprint when designing and implementing a .NET layered application architecture. The application uses the standard Northwind database, as included in Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access: no modifications to the database schema are required in order to install and run the starter kit.

Project leader and main architect is Andrea Saltarello
Current active developers are: Andrea Saltarello
Past active developers were: Corrado Cavalli, Giancarlo Sudano, Luca Minudel, Marco Barzaghi

The application has been designed using common patterns, such as the ones defined within the "classic" "Designs Patterns" by Erich Gamma et al. and "Pattern of Enterprise Application Architecture", by Martin Fowler; though not required, these lectures are strongly recommended.

Domain logic is implemented by means of a Domain Model, onto a layer of services adds application logic. The model is persisted by a DAL designed around the principles of "Separated Interface" and "Plugin" patterns, in order to have concrete DAL implementations for: ADO.NET SqlClient, ADO.NET OleDb client and NHibernate
The presentation layer has been implemented twice: the first implementation take advantage of a Model View Presenter implementation where the presenter logic is shared between views based built upon: ASP.NET Web Forms, Windows Forms and Windows Presentation Foundation.
There is also a web-only MVC version, implementd using both Castle's Monorail and ASP.NET MVC framework Refresh4

The static NavigationService class is not suitable for use in a ASP.NET web application. In the sample code the Argument property for the NavigationService class is used to pass state information from one presenter to the next, for instance from the CustomerListPresenter to the CustomerDetailPresenter. In a web application there's no gaurantee another request won't arrive from another user and overwrite the static Argument property. Or if the web application is deployed to a load balanced web farm its possible for the CustomerDetailPresenter to get created on a totally seperate machine.

This problem will not show up in simple unit tests, and it won't show up on a lightly loaded web application.

Or am I missing something....
